World Wetland Day celebrations

 

 

Dr.Ramachandran Thekkedath Hon. Vice Chancellor, Cochin University of Science and Technology inagurated the seminar on Wetlands Value and Functions. In the  inagural address Hon. V.C stressed that our  rivers, lakes, backwaters, mangrove habitats, adjoining coastal ecosystems and other wetland habitats are under intense eco degradation and pollution problems, pointing to the very glaring fact that the existence of mankind is itself ultimately getting affected. He also call up on each one of us to join to conserve, sustain and utilize the wetlands around us judiciously for well being and betterment of the society. He also paid attention  in planting  more trees, since this year is more significant as international year of forests and create awareness against the wanton destruction of our pristine and productive wetland habitats for the future of our future generations. Dr. N. Chandramohanakuamr, Registrar & Head of the Department of Marine Biology, Microbiology & Biochemistry, CUSAT presided over the inagural session . Dr. V.V.Sugunan , Technical Advisor, Bay of Bengal Large Marine Ecosystem programme (BOBLME) delivered the keynote address stressing the need for valuation of  Wetlands System and monitoring the environmental flows for the  management and conservaton of the depleting habitats. Dr. H.S Ram Mohan, Director & Dean School of Marine Sciences & Dr. G.K Vinci Formar Scientist CIFRI offered felicitaion.

Dr. Babu Philip welcomed the audience and Dr. S. Bijoy Nandan (Organising Secretary) gave a background on the seminar. Dr. Prabhakaran M.P delivered the vote of thanks.
